The first three days of my internship have gone flying along so I’ve forgotten to check in.

I was originally assigned to property at the Courier Mail but on the first day me and another intern from QUT were sent over to property at Quest instead. This turned out to be a really good thing however, as they were recently short two property reporters so they had heaps of work for us to do.

So far we’ve done a variety of tasks. On the first day we chased recent Real Estate listings. Each week in the property section of Quest publications a market update page shows two properties that recently came on the market. It actually ended up being a fair amount of work getting the new listings for the various publications and it gave me an appreciation of the parts of journalism that we rarely think about.

Our editor has been really cool, helping us interns with any questions we’ve got. There is a bit of a learning curve for anything.  A lot of the work we do is sourced from real estate data sets in Excel. I’m far from a computer expert so using Excel has been a bit of a new thing for me.

We’ve been given some stories to do, and I think we are doing pretty good. They may not be the most exciting subjects, but everything has an audience and bringing my enthusiasm to anything they throw at me.

Yesterday though I overheard a cadet in the cubicle over talk with his editor about a recent interview he did with Duff McKagan. The former bass player for one of the greatest rock bands of all time, Guns n Roses. I asked him about it and for him interviewing Duff was just another day at the office. Jealous!

Anyway, now it’s time for day four.
