Last Thursday we went down to the Independent offices for a demonstration on sub-editing. Don walked us through what sub-editor does–winge, winge and winge, err…edit, correct and fix. He then showed us how his software worked, how he adjusted font, format, layout and size. Although, I think the best part of the morning was when we took a story and as a group, collectively edited it. It was invaluable to see how stories are adjusted, what extra information was needed (it was my story so I had the extra info that I had not worked in, some of which turned out to be important), and how it was tweaked to fit the needs of the paper. The end result was so much better than my original draft! Two thumbs up for subbing.
